Because I think it's a great idea. I post my PhD news to my blog, but it doesn't always get the same results as it woudl in an all-academic audience. Besides, a doctoral thesis is still a thesis, right?|
Anyways, I want to squee a bit. I named my thesis the other day (and posted it to my blog, and got good comments, but I want to share!), and it's re-focussed my work liek a crazy thing.
So here it is:
GLOBAL THOUGHT, LOCAL ACTION:
Rediscovering a Transnational Australian Antiwar Movement, 1959-1972
(PS anyone who saw it on my journal, yes I have changed 'Peace' to 'Antiwar' because that one word change lets me ignore a bunch of stuff I can't really deal with in 100,000 words)
I love it.
I agree that it's really hard to talk about your thesis outside an academic arena, because people are dumb and incapable of giving constructive criticism.
The difficulty lies in that critcism is usually ignorant of academic norms, so it is either non-existent ("oh, that sounds cool"), or misguided ("I think you shoudl call it somethign that takes Vietnam Vets into consideration").
Which isn't to say non-academic people are stupid (because they're not), just that it's a highly specific genre of writing, and the tile is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO important :)
I'm the only one left still writing a thesis (I went part-time and did the coursework last year). I'm still stuck for a title, but I think that's partly because I've only partially figured out my topic... And it's due in four and a half weeks. ... Yeah, I suck.
My supervisor named my honours thesis for me, and if he hadn't, I wouldn't have written it the way I did.
But that was more to do with my topic being a bit of a rort. There's no way I would have come up with a title until waaaay late otherwise.
Love the icon. So incredibly true. I think it was a month ago I was whingeing that "I do't want to be a PhD student anymore, I just want the PhD."
Hmmm. My supervisor is known to be one of the hardkorr-est academics in the department. I'm not sure if he's going to give me that one...
Heh, yeah. Totally. Is this a PhD in history you're writing, then? When do you finish?
Ohhhh... You're with Dirk, aren't you?
It's due 2009.
Heh. Did you guess, or did you know?
Golly. That's a long way away. Good on you for sticking with something that long!
Heehee. Julia told me, I think.
Also, don't congratulate me yet, I've only stuck with it for six months so far ;)
I'm still doing my MPhil. I finish June/July next year.
I didn't realise it was an M.Phil.
What's it in?
Same as PhD just shorter (40-60k), and not as massively reliant on being an un-researched topic.
Bah, can't read :-/
It's with the religion department.
Actually, you shoudl totally post about it, get this community going again.
Oh, right, hello there! : )
