Was anyone else here doing Violence in History as their General Seminar? Nick just mailed me my essay mark and comments, and although the comments are very critical, I still recieved 81. With these comments I would have expected something closer to 65 - are the marks inflated because of honours, or is Nick just big on constructive criticism?

From what I've hears he's just big on criticism.

No academics ever gives you no comments. My highest mark ever was still followed by a HUGE 'how you could have doen better' essay of comments.

Remember that they mark you in comparison to your classmates, not against come absolute. They don't match the mark to the comments.

Well, I dare say you're right. Although I tremble to think what anyone who failed must have been hit with.

Yeah, I got 78 (D, woot!) for my essay for Dirk "I Am Teh Ebil" Moses despite the most debilitating criticism...

(I knew it was a shithouse essay; I'm actually happy with the mark, so the only problem with the bad comments is that he's my supervisor for next year, eep!)

(Oh, and go you with the 80+ mark!)

I got a 74. I also got the most awful comments ever.

The really depressing thing is that I got a 78 for my other essay, which I thought was pretty awful, and I thought that the 74 essay was the best thing I'd ever written. And the comments were... well, enough to make me cry. Which probably isn't saying much right now, but still.
